Hey, please keep this document confidential. It’s kinda important.

You just joined a movement! LANEY & LU is an innovative and exciting fine fast casual eatery. More than simply another salad and smoothie bar concept, LANEY & LU is a destination for neighbors, friends, entrepreneurs, and leaders to connect with vibrant food and one another.

We believe food can serve a far greater purpose than to simply fill your stomach. The ‘right’ food nourishes your soul, builds community, and connects people with the earth. Contribution and connection with uncompromising integrity and transparency are the cornerstones of every action and decision at LANEY & LU.

We are confident that you will find LANEY & LU a dynamic and rewarding place in which to work. At the heart of our success is our team. Team is everything. Your individual good vibes, superpowers and interests build up the team as a whole, strengthen the customer experience, and infuse our food.

LANEY & LU’s in-store menu includes small batch, locally roasted, organic fair-trade coffee, herbalist-designed, organic herbal teas, crafted functional beverages, sublime smoothies and smoothie bowls, hearty rice and quinoa bowls, bright and happy salads, wraps and sandwiches, and grab n’ go snacks.

We embrace a bold commitment to sustainability that is unmatched by local and regional competitors. We work with dozens of local farmers and merchants to serve food harvested at peak freshness and to positively impact local ecosystems. It utilizes compostable packaging with a commitment to being ‘zero waste’ to the customer and cultivate container gardens of vegetables on their patio.

The café’s design is bright, clean, and inviting with reclaimed wood shelves and a re-purposed community bench, blended with a large hand drawn chalk board, minimalist industrial chairs, and daily inspirational messages handwritten on a roll
of brown kraft paper. It’s a perfect fusion of old and new, comfort and chic. Elements of concrete, wood, and bright and clean surfaces will be carried through new locations while having an awareness to local and neighborhood vibes and the architectural integrity of the space.

From the seed of creation, LANEY & LU has been mindful and true to its purpose and mission, and deliberate in sharing that lifestyle to inspire its guests to become raving fans and to ‘Live Vibrantly.’

Eat consciously. Live vibrantly.

Contribution and Connection.

Team Lu is an extraordinary bunch of entrepreneurs, leaders, foodies, creatives, stewards of the Earth, students, and athletes. Team Lu is much more than simply a group of employees - YOU are the life, love, and embodiment of LANEY & LU’s live vibrantly lifestyle. Serving as ambassadors of LANEY & LU’s culture, Team Lu is both a marketing strategy and an essential part of the development of Laney & Lu’s brand.

LANEY & LU delivers legendary service that people tell stories about. Team members cultivate genuine connections to our guests and each other. These relationships are an integral part of customer and employee retention.

Leadership’s hiring mindset of 1+1=3 is the value add of LANEY & LU’s team and culture. We carefully hire team members that embrace and represent our vision. Leadership’s fundamental belief is that if they focus on the team, the team focuses on the guest, and the guest focuses on the business.

We understand the transient nature of the typical restaurant workforce, therefore great care is taken to onboard the right people, train them effectively, and treat them like family. Laney & Lu leadership believes that the employee’s experience is equally as important as the customer’s experience.

LANEY & LU believes success is measured by the way it conducts itself and achieves its goals, and how it stays rooted in its philosophies as well as contributes to the community and the planet. We believe favorable sales revenues, guest counts, profitability, and key performance indicators (KPIs) are indicative that it is successful in its mission and always staying true to its commitments. The Team Lu Honor Code is embraced by the entire team and can be witnessed both in and out of the cafe.

We know that good isn’t good enough. We never stop trying to do it better, no matter what. We embrace change as inevitable and understand that progress takes action. We see pursuing progress as a critical component of our purpose and mission.

We work to build trust with others in each and every interaction. We recognize that honesty and trust form the bond that holds the team and our relationships together.

We believe in ongoing training and personal development. We see it as a worthy investment in the future of LANEY & LU and ourselves to achieve our highest potential in whatever we do.

There is no asset more important than the team. We know that great achievements are only possible by helping and respecting each other. Every team member is important and cherished.

Having an adventurous and open-minded spirit is an essential part of keeping our environment up beat and positive.

We do what we say we are going to do when we say we are going to do it. We believe in personal accountability and understand that we alone are responsible for our actions.

LANEY & LU breaks through the perceptions and boundaries of traditional vegetarian restaurants and juice/smoothie bars. Approachability and inclusiveness are important distinctions. We don’t believe healthy food should be limiting, exclusive, or snobby. It is LANEY & LU’s vision to serve the healthiest fast fine food that is:

  • Real - no artificial fillers, additives, or flavors
Clean - strategically organic, free of chemicals, antibiotics, hormones, or fertilizers

  • From scratch - all food and beverage made from scratch daily and/or to order

  • Nutrient-dense - vegetables are sourced seasonally from local farmers, harvested and served at peak freshness to
preserve nutritional value; raw seeds and nuts are sprouted and dehydrated, providing delicious protein dense options

  • Functional - rich in health benefits like phytochemicals, antioxidants, and micronutrients

  • Transformational - unique neutraceutical superfoods that support healing and optimized wellness

  • Seasonal - menus adjust regularly to highlight in-season produce and flavors

We believe in our responsibility to make a meaningful contribution to the community beyond just serving vibrant food. Our conscious commerce business model extends from seed to sale.
LANEY & LU has bold goals for sourcing and sustainability and support from inside the community, embracing a neighborhood-centric model of doing business. When guests eat at LANEY & LU, they participate in this important movement, which aims to grow better food, preserve the Earth, and inspire people to embrace their greatness.

Our menu features locally-sourced ingredients, harvested and sold at peak freshness. LANEY & LU works with over a dozen local farmers and merchants, many of whom are organic. By embracing ecological practices, these farmers replenish the soil and the plants’ own biological systems. What this means for the consumer is they get the absolute freshest, most nutrient-dense food possible on their plates.
LANEY & LU’s superfoods, spices, coffee, and herbs for teas are organic, fair trade, non-irradiated, and sourced from the best quality manufacturers in order to ensure the highest nutrition and quality. All dairy and eggs are organic, and free of antibiotics and hormones. The cow’s milk, cheese, and butter are sourced from local farms and always grass-fed.

LANEY & LU has a ZERO WASTE COMMITMENT to protecting the planet and it’s resources by minimizing our footprint. All of the packaging is 100% compostable, biodegradable, recyclable, or reusable.

LANEY & LU’s food waste is composted locally where it is converted into nutrient-dense compost soil and put back into the local ecosystem.

All cleaning and sanitizing agents are Green Seal Certified. Paper supplies are made from 100% recycled materials.

Thoughtful design and material selection in the cafe includes zero-VOC paint, natural wood finishes, reclaimed wood community bench and shelving, concrete and recycled surfaces, and environmentally-friendly flooring.

LANEY & LU cultivates nearly 60SF of container gardening space on the café’s patio using organic compost and non-GMO seeds. Throughout the growing season, the gardens are tended by Team Lu. Harvests include kale, chard, herbs, edible flowers, squash, and pea tendrils. The garden further invigorates the “eat local” messaging, generating opportunity for real-time education with guests and team members alike.

Jennifer Desrosiers is the Founder of Laney & Lu. Since its opening in September 2015, Jennifer has utilized her experience as a corporate executive, wellness and lifestyle coach, yoga teacher, and community leader to shape LANEY & LU into a source of sustainable, real, and delicious sustenance that brings people together for a powerful common vision of connection, collaboration, and contribution. Her efforts have created a thriving community surrounding LANEY & LU which has launched the café toward incredible success and continued growth.

As a native of Vermont, Jennifer attended Vermont Technical College where she earned her undergraduate degree in Architectural Engineering before taking on roles such as Marketing Analyst, Business Manager, and Business Development Manager, in which she traveled throughout the US and the globe to ensure her team’s success. After 15 years of dedicated service to others’ visions, Jennifer refocused her sights on what it was she was committed to creating in the world, which led her to pursuing her certification as a yoga instructor and holistic health coach. It was from that space that the vision of LANEY & LU was born.

In addition to her collaborations with local farmers, her team, and others who are passionate about real food and sustainable living, Jennifer is dedicated to her role as a community leader and is involved in projects and missions which give back. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for The Chase Home and Sustainable Seacoast and has founded a wellness and lifestyle media company called Wild Adventurous Life. Jennifer enjoys hiking in the mountains, luxurious car camping, French press coffee, and being upside down on her yoga mat. Learn more, here.

oN boarding, training, & development

On boarding actually begins at the interview where we carefully select people that we believe are aligned with our culture and can contribute greatly to our team with their own “super powers”.  Once hired, new team members will meet with a member of our Leadership Team to complete the on boarding process.  Along with discussing our culture and how it is infused in all that we do, necessary paperwork is completed and a full, extensive review of this guidebook is done.

Training begins after on-boarding when you start your journey with your Training Passport. Our training passport is much like a trail map (a visual representation of training requirements) with a beginning and many possibilities/trails of where to go next. You are the master of your passport. Your passport will help you keep track of when items are introduced, when you’ve completed them with guidance, when you can complete them with excellence, and when you are ready to train others. Training occurs during slower service times and can be scheduled with a Team Leader or Kitchen Lead. Take initiative to ask for the training to complete your passport!

Evaluations are conducted to provide an opportunity to share feedback and connect on any questions that you may have. While you may do a check in at anytime, an evaluation is a time set aside “soul-y” for you. Your performance on all essential job responsibilities will be evaluated, feedback will be provided, and a plan for excellence will be developed. This plan will be co-authored by you and a Team Leader and it will outline a strategy for you to bring your best to the LANEY & LU experience. When you have demonstrated excellence in all areas of the evaluation, we will take the opportunity to celebrate your commitment and talk about what might be next for you.

Evaluations will be completed three months after a member has joined the team, and annually thereafter.  The Evaluation will be used as a tool as needed to assist in coaching, supporting, or providing feedback to a team member.

Raises and promotions will be granted with consideration of performance, longevity, and commitment based on the needs and resources of LANEY & LU.

Triangles are inherently the strongest of shapes. An equilateral triangle, one with sides all of equal length is the most robust. We have used this perfect science as a model of our development tool and created the “Trusty Triangle”. We believe that if all three sides of the triangle are equally valued and nurtured, the result is a strong, resilient, in this case a truly happy person. At the three points of this triangle represent the LANEY & LU culture, your personal core values and the work you do to bring them to life. The strength in the sides that connect the points is how strongly or well aligned the points are as they connect. Using this triangle as a development tool, is a balanced way for your most authentic self to be seen and for team Lu to benefit and grow from having you on the team.

As a team member, you have the duty and the responsibility to be aware of and abide by existing policies and procedures. You also have the responsibility to perform duties to the best of your ability and to the standards as set forth in your job description or as otherwise established.

At LANEY & LU excellence is a must in our product and service. If at any time, performance of a team member compromises either of these, it will be addressed. If that team member follows our honor code, is aligned with our mission and has an attitude that demonstrates growth and learning, we will create a coaching plan. In other cases that involve misconduct or behavior that compromises the team or product, we may decide that separation is appropriate. LANEY & LU reserves the right to determine the appropriate level of discipline for any misconduct, including oral and written warnings, suspension with or without pay, demotion and discharge.

All winning teams practice, have strategy meetings, and connect to stay sharp and cohesive.   The following communication tools ensure we are operating from our honor code and committed to providing legendary guest experiences.

On an as-needed basis, usually in the morning prior to lunch service and in the afternoon prior to close, 1 Minute Huddles are called for all those on shift. These huddles are short and fast-paced and serve to get all team members aligned on daily specials, inventory issues, and specific daily responsibilities/tasks, etc.

In our scheduling app, Homebase, is a communication board that allows us to communicate easily and efficiently with teams and individual team members. Every team member will be invited to join Homebase as part of on boarding and become part of the “Entire Team” channel. Your job is to set your notifications as “on” so that you receive important communications and stay informed. You may also use the direct messaging feature to chat privately with another team member.

Each team member will have a quarterly check-in with a member of the Leadership Team. The 4Q’s is a brief questionaire to be filled out by each employee prior to the check-in that will inform the conversation. The intent is to maintain full engagement in our mission as well as allow of continued growth for you and the company.

Members of the Leadership Team will meet a minimum of once per month to discuss the overall wellness and growth of specific locations or houses.

All Hands Meetings are mandatory team gatherings that occur quarterly. These meetings come in all shapes and sizes. Some are in the café where we provide training and updates. Others may be an opportunity to “cherish the team” and collaborate on something or engage in some team building, aka, good old-fashioned fun.

Virtual Huddles may pop up in your Homebase feed. This is designed to share communication in the most efficient, conscientious manner without interruption of service. When you see a virtual huddle, you must like the post to confirm that it’s “heard” within 48 hours.

Questions are welcome, always. For the sake of time and attention, decide if your question is a “gotta know now” or a “would like to know soon” kind of question. Something you “gotta know now” is an issue that needs immediate attention to ensure excellent product or service. These types of questions should be addressed with your Team Leader immediately.  “Would like to know soon” is a thought, idea or question that can wait until the end of shift, a lull in the flow or even posted in Homebase.

Clear communication is essential. While it may be good that some of our foods ferment, it’s never good for a negative work situation. In order to maintain a healthy, happy work environment, we must all commit to open, honest, and timely communication.

LANEY & LU Leadership promotes ongoing, open communication between all team members, regardless of role within the company. When issues arise, we encourage direct, honest communication between the team members involved. We recognize however for various reasons, that this may not be achieved and the Leadership Team is committed to help work toward a solution. Unresolved issues, frustrations or concerns can affect the whole team and ultimately our community.

At LANEY & LU, the employees are friendly, welcoming, and wildly energetic. When guests enter the cafe, they are greeted with the warmth and authenticity shown to an old friend, loaded up with care and hospitality. Guests’ names and favorite menu items are learned and remembered. The team attentively watches to anticipate needs or opportunities to engage in friendly conversation. Whatever it takes to foster community connection and instill the feeling that the LANEY & LU team is there for them. The team smiles and makes eye contact, smiling even when answering the phone. They own and apologize for mistakes, a long wait time or even if someone is having a bad day. Any opportunity to brighten someone’s day or deliver legendary customer service is taken.

We believe there are “4 Moments of Truth” for our guests. Every time a guest interacts with our brand online, enters the eatery, interacts with a team member, and experiences the food are critical make or break moments for guest satisfaction. If any or all of these moments are negative, customer trust may be eroded and we may jeopardize brand loyalty in the future.

The unique way that the LANEY & LU team takes orders at the counter, handles online orders, and delivers food to each customer makes its service model an entire experience. While other cafes in the fine fast casual industry may see each customer interaction as a simple transaction, we see each interaction as an opportunity to improve someone’s day and spread the Live Vibrantly movement.

Dress and grooming are yet another way that we communicate our values and brand. Please arrive fresh and vibrant, like the food we serve. Team member uniforms vary, depending on your role.

Soul Servers I and II contribute to the branding of LANEY & LU in their dress and interactions with our community. The uniform for these team members is a cool LANEY & LU shirt, clean blue or black jeans (no holes, even stylish ones) or tan or black chino-style pants and closed-toe, non-slip shoes. Layering a solid black, white, or gray shirt underneath your team shirt is allowed. Sweaters worn over your L&L tee should be cardigan style, black, white, or gray, and must not cover tee shirt branding or come in contact with the food or food surfaces. Accessories, like scarves, are not permitted. L&L hats only are welcomed.

The kitchen team members contribute to the branding of LANEY & LU in the delivery of nourishing, creative, conscious food and dress according to professional industry standards. This uniform includes a cool LANEY & LU shirt or chef coat and clean blue or black jeans (no holes, even stylish ones), tan or black chino-style pants or chef pants with closed toe, non-slip shoes. Layering a solid black, white, or gray shirt underneath your café shirt is allowed. Accessories are not permitted.

LANEY & LU provides aprons for those that wish to wear them.  They must be clean and wrinkle free and changed as necessary to maintain this fresh, clean appearance. Only LANEY & LU provided pins and buttons may be worn on aprons.

All team members must keep hair and nails clean and groomed, with hair pulled back from face and shoulders and facial hair neat and closely trimmed. Jewelry may only be worn that does not interfere with our clean, sanitary standard (ie. long necklaces, large rings).

Here’s the deal, our appearance communicates our brand as much as any other aspect of our business. While we honor your personal expression, offensive tattoos, creative hair styling, and piercings can distract from our brand. Facial tattoos and facial piercings (except for small stud in nose or eyebrow) are not permitted. Ear lobe plugs shall be no larger than 1/2”. We reserve the right to ask for piercings and tattoos to be covered up while at work should we deem them out of alignment with our brand.

Fragrances and perfumes must be in-line with our Clean Air Policy and must not interfere with the fresh smell of the café.

If any of these items are amiss, you are not ready for your shift and you will not be allowed to clock in. The Team Leader will decide if you should change and return, or forgo the shift. This will be considered a late arrival for your shift or unexcused absence, depending on the decision.

Each new member will be given a uniform shirt upon joining the team. If your schedule will include more than one shift per week, you will be given 2 uniform shirts. In maintaining a clean appearance, you must notify the Team Leader if your shirt shows wear and a replacement will be ordered for you. Opportunities to order new ones will be posted, should you want additional shirts because you may not love doing laundry or are inspired by a new design. In the event that you lose your uniform shirt, you are required to replace it. New or replacement shirts can be purchased at 50% discount.

In keeping with conscious living, we ask that those who depart for new adventures, return their uniform shirt to be repurposed.

LANEY & LU is committed to providing a safe, vibrant, health conscious, and nourishing environment that is:

  • Free of drugs and alcohol

  • Free of verbal and physical violence

  • Free of smoking

  • Free of weapons

  • Free of harassment of any kind

  • Free of toxic complaining or gossip

  • Free of electronic distraction

LANEY & LU’s success is as much about its culture as it vibrant, nourishing foods. We believe and uphold that everyone should and will be treated with respect and dignity. LANEY & LU believes in equal opportunity and prohibits any practices of discrimination, including, but not limited to sexual harassment, or harassment based on race, color, religion, creed, age, sex, national origin or ancestry, marital status, gender preference or orientation, veteran’s status or status as a qualified individual with a disability, collectively referred to as, “unlawful harassment”.

Any report by a team member that violations have occurred that are not in keeping with the LANEY & LU environment will be handled with high regard to respect and confidentiality. We want your working experience to be just as positive as the experience we strive to create for our customers.

It is the responsibility of each team member to conduct all tasks in a safe and efficient manner complying with all local, state, and federal safety and health regulations and policies of LANEY & LU that employ best practices for the industry.

The safety of our team members is critically important.  You will be trained as a new-hire on the procedures to ensure job safety in detail.  Below is a list of reminders:

  • Never run or walk too quickly. We have a small space, and no matter how busy we get, avoiding spills and accidents will be more manageable if we pay attention and move around with intention. Try to say “behind you” when moving behind someone’s workstation so that they know you are there. When carrying a knife or other sharp object, say, “sharp” so team members raise their awareness as well.

  • Always wear shoes with non-slip soles and closed toes. These are readily available at several major shoe retailers. If you have trouble finding them, please ask your Team Leader, and they will point you in the right direction.

  • Always report defective equipment to the leadership team immediately. Never operate equipment unless you have been properly trained on its operation, cleaning protocol, and maintenance schedule.

  • Always use proper lifting techniques when moving equipment and boxes of supplies. Remember to bend your knees, and lift with your legs, not your back.

We are obsessed with food safety. All of our hard work to source and prepare the freshest and highest quality food for our customers will have been a waste if we do not store, prepare, and serve it safely. In our primarily raw veggie café, safe food handling practices are non-negotiable. Food safety will be part of everyone’s training and will be strictly enforced. What this entails will be explained in detail as part of your new hire training.

Some of the things you will learn are:

  • Proper hand washing

  • Wearing and changing gloves

  • Sanitizing procedures for workstations and equipment and preventing different types of contamination

  • Protocol for handling a food allergy

  • Keeping food at the proper temperatures and storage

  • How to receive food deliveries and what to be keenly aware of

To maintain the health and safety of our team and community, LANEY & LU reserves the right to relieve you of your duties or shift if you have any of the following symptoms; vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, sore throat with fever, or an open-exposed wound/cut/lesion. You are also required to report if you have been diagnosed or exposed with norovirus, typhoid fever (Salmonella Typhi), shigellosis (Shigella spp. infection), Escherichia coli O157:H7 or other EHEC/STEC infection, or hepatitis A (hepatitis A virus infection).

Report all accidents to the Team Leader on your shift, no matter how minor they seem. In the event of an obvious emergency, like choking, notify a Team Leader immediately and call 911 if appropriate.

If you are ever involved in a robbery attempt, the safety of you, other employees, and our customers is the highest priority. Do not resist. Cooperate fully and give them what they are asking for.

All employees must know the location and proper use of the fire extinguishers. In the event of a fire alarm, stay calm and assist guests out of the building.

Laney & Lu maintains a fixed schedule, assigning shifts that you will be expected to work each week. Great care and attention goes into creating a schedule that honors team member’s preferred number of hours /days, and requested time off (RTO). The schedule is usually posted monthly. Each team member manages their own schedule, meaning, if you would like time off, are ill, or need time for any reason, you must find a member of the team to cover or switch with you. All changes must be communicated to and approved by the Team Leader. In order to ensure service excellence, we reserve the right to make schedule changes that meet the needs of the café. We will take every step to give a minimum of one week’s notice of such changes that may affect you.

Time off requests must be received by 15th of the previous month. Your request with be reviewed and accepted or denied based on the needs of the business. etc. Habitual requests for changes to your schedule place a hardship on the team. If this should occur, we will have a discussion to address minimizing this as quickly as possible and could result in loss of shifts or dismissal.

Team members who fail to report to work and do not notify a Team Leader shall be considered to have abandoned the job without notice, effective at the end of their normal missed shift. They will not be eligible for re-hire.

Upon receipt of notification from the state or federal courts of an obligation to serve on a jury, employees must notify the Team Leader and provide him/her with a copy of the jury summons.

Being on time for your shift, means that when you clock in, it is “go-time”. To clock in, you must have already used the bathroom, put away personal belongings, and are ready to start your shift. As well, clocking out is done promptly when you have finished your shift. Clocking in/out for another member of the team is not allowed (without Team Leader approval) and will be handled very seriously.

Breaks are taken when there is not an interruption to service, meaning slower periods of a shift. Team members shall work with each other to arrange this. Any member scheduled over 5 hours consecutively is entitled to a lunch or eating period of 30-minutes by State of NH law. Any team member taking a 30-minute break or leaving the premises must clock out and clock back in upon return.

Nursing mothers may take time throughout the day to express breast milk. We realize that coordinating the timing of these breaks with the Team Leader and/or team members to fit into business flow may not always be achieved but consideration is appreciated. Privacy and comfort is available in the office at the White House.

To remain consistent with our message of healthy living, the designated smoking area is away from the café, but with consideration of our neighbors toward the back of the parking lot, near the dumpsters.

Your hourly earnings as well as all tips (if applicable) will be reported as income and are subject to withholding of income tax, social security tax, and employee Medicare tax. For front of house employees, this includes tips given by charge and cash customers. Your pay stub will break down your earnings including wages and tips earned and reported (if applicable). Payroll is made weekly, on Friday for the previous Sunday through Saturday. To ensure proper reporting, cash tips will be collected daily and dispersed weekly. Cash tips may be picked up no later than Friday, following the week earned.

We, as the employer, are required to report all income, and you as the employees are required to claim all tips. Our gratuity policy facilitates accurate reporting and appropriate documentation for completion of income tax at year-end.

Notify management of any change of name, address, or change in dependence so that we may update your personnel file to ensure your W-2 at year-end will be delivered to you.

Suggesting or demanding that any type of conventional gratuity is expected or required for any service is prohibited. It is inappropriate for any employee to accept gifts, favors or bribes from any customer, vendor, or anyone else conducting business, or intending to conduct business with LANEY & LU.

Team members are paid by direct deposit of funds to either a savings or checking account at the financial institution of their choice. Lost paychecks must be reported to management as soon as you realize the check has been misplaced. We will stop payment on your payroll check and issue you a new check on the next payroll cycle. The replacement check will incur a deduction equal to the bank stop payment charge.

LANEY & LU will close early, open late, or close entirely on several days throughout the year in hopes that the team may have time for celebration, rest, and relaxation. Hourly employees will not be paid for holidays. For a complete list of holidays please click, here.

LANEY & LU wants YOU and our customers to enjoy food and drink that nourishes your body and feeds your soul. In that spirit, we would like you to have a discount of 20% off of food and drink. Unfortunately we are unable to extend this discount to friends and family.

When working, we are happy to extend a discount of 50% off of food and drink (except CBD oil). You may also enjoy unlimited single leaf teas, drip coffee, and bottled water. When you work a shift of 5 hours or more, we invite you to enjoy a shift meal free (up to $11.00). Shift meal includes all items on menu as well as our tea blends, espresso drinks, crafted brews and blends, and cold brew coffee.

The following guidelines must be followed:

  • Staff food/drink is rung into register by a team member only. Discounts require Team Leader approval.

  • No staff food or drinks are prepared without a ticket. This includes any food/drink except single leaf teas, drip coffee, and bottled water.

  • Superfoods should be utilized with “respect” in your shift meals! We can’t stress enough how expensive these foods are. Remember if you add them, you will need to pay for them.

  • Open staff tickets must be paid for (if applicable) at the end of your shift.

  • No IOU’s or debits from tips/payroll are allowed.

LANEY & LU is covered under statutory state workers’ compensation laws. Employees who sustain work-related injuries must immediately notify the Team Leader. It is required that the incident be documented on the appropriate forms and the required follow-up is completed. Should a team member sustain an injury that results in an inability to work, they may only return when documentation is provided stating that returning to work is approved by a treating physician. All procedures stipulated by our Workers’ Compensation Insurance Carrier must be followed to ensure delivery of benefits.

Cell phone and other electronic device use during your shift are not allowed. If you need to make a call that is personal in nature or wish to check messages or social media, please do this on your break privately. Cell phone use to play music is allowed in the kitchen only but frequent distraction due to texting, social media, etc. will cause for immediate removal of this privilege.

Unless necessary for LANEY & LU business (i.e. Team Leaders/chefs), or in rare cases of personal emergency, cell phones are to be left with your personal items and not carried in your pocket.

LANEY & LU expects that team members will use their best judgment when using social media personally as it relates to the café. We ask that you give careful consideration when posting content and be mindful that we are a team. We love when you spread the LANEY & LU mission by “checking in”, posting pictures of our beautiful food, or tagging the location.

You may not post anything anywhere on behalf of LANEY & LU without written permission from the Owner.  A post like “LANEY & LU supports Beyonce for President!” is not a suitable post.

Employees may not copy, retrieve, modify or forward copyrighted materials, except with permission or as a single copy to reference only. Internal and external e-mails are considered business records and may be subject to discovery in the event of litigation. Be aware of this possibility when sending e-mail within and outside the company.

LANEY & LU prohibits the solicitation, distribution, and posting of materials on or at company property by any employee or non-employee. The sole exceptions to this policy are at the discretion of the Owner of LANEY & LU and will be for charitable and community activities and/or company-sponsored programs related to LANEY & LU’s products and services. Such postings should be placed on the community board in the bathroom only.

LANEY & LU complies with applicable state and local laws governing nondiscrimination in employment in every location in which the company has facilities. This policy applies to all terms and conditions of employment, including hiring, placement, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, transfer, leave of absence, compensation, and training.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act, known as the ADAAA, are federal laws that prohibit employers with 15 or more employees from discriminating against applicants and individuals with disabilities and that when needed provide reasonable accommodations to applicants and employees who are qualified for a job, with or without reasonable accommodations, so that they may perform the essential job duties of the position.

It is the policy of LANEY & LU to comply with all federal and state laws concerning the employment of persons with disabilities and to act in accordance with regulations and guidance issued by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Furthermore, it is our company policy not to discriminate against qualified individuals with disabilities in regard to application procedures, hiring, advancement, discharge, compensation, training, or other terms, conditions, and privileges of employment.

The company will reasonably accommodate qualified individuals with a disability so that they can perform the essential functions of a job unless doing so causes a direct threat to these individuals or others in the workplace, and the threat cannot be eliminated by reasonable accommodation and/or if the accommodation creates an undue hardship to LANEY & LU. Any questions should be directed to the Owner.

All employees are designated as either nonexempt or exempt under state and federal wage and hour laws. The following is intended to help employees understand employment classifications and employees’ employment status. These classifications do not guarantee employment for any specified period of time. The right to terminate the employment-at-will relationship at any time is retained by both the employee and LANEY & LU.

Nonexempt employees are employees whose work is covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). They are NOT exempt from the law’s requirements concerning minimum wage and overtime.

Exempt employees are generally Team Leaders or professional, administrative or technical staff who ARE exempt from the minimum wage and overtime provisions of the FLSA. Exempt employees hold jobs that meet the standards and criteria established under the FLSA by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Separation of employment from LANEY & LU can occur for several different reasons.

  • Resignation: Although we hope your employment with us will be a mutually rewarding experience, we understand that varying circumstances cause team members to voluntarily resign. Resigning employees are encouraged to provide two weeks’ notice to the House Leader, preferably in writing, to facilitate a smooth transition.

  • Job Abandonment: Employees who fail to report to work and do not notify a team leader shall be considered to have abandoned the job without notice, effective at the end of their normal missed shift. They will not be eligible for re-hire.

  • Termination: Employees of LANEY & LU are employed on an at-will basis, and the company retains the right to terminate an employee at any time.
